What Mattress Do You Need?

Before you even find a mattress sale, you need to work out what mattress you need. Knowing that you’re a side sleeper who gets overly hot and sleeps next to a partner who tosses and turns all night, will guide you.

Mattress Sizes

Obviously, the larger the mattress size the more it will cost, even in a mattress sale. Here are the sizes you’re going to come across. Measure your bed frame to work out which you need.

• Twin Mattress Sale

A twin bed will fit one average sized adult but is usually the bed of choice of kids and teenagers. It doesn’t give you much space to move around, so it’s most suitable for still sleepers. It’s the best choice for dorm rooms and kid’s bedrooms. The dimensions are: 38 inches x 75 inches.

• Twin XL Mattress Sale

Also known as the ‘Twin Long’. Very similar to the twin size, but slightly longer. This is perfect for those that have outgrown the twin bed but don’t have the space or budget for a larger mattress. It’s still not big enough to share, but at least your feet won’t be hanging off the end! The dimensions are: 38 inches x 80 inches.

• Full Mattress Sale

Also known as the ‘Double’. This is the smallest size mattress that you can share with your partner… just about. Traditionally it was the bed of choice of couples, but since the Queen size mattress became a thing the Full mattress is only really slept on by single sleepers who like extra space. You can squeeze 2 people on this mattress, but for better comfort consider a Queen or larger! The dimensions are: 54 inches x 75 inches.

• Queen Mattress Sale

This is the standard mattress size, with enough breathing space for 2 average sized people to sleep comfortably. When you see a mattress online or in store with just 1 price tag, generally that will be for the Queen size mattress. It’s usually the most cost effective when you work out the price per sleeper and will fit comfortably in the standard double bedroom. The dimensions are: 60 inches x 80 inches.

• King Mattress Sale

The King bed offers more width than the queen, delivering better comfort for the average sleeper and enough space for the star-fish sleeping position. This is where mattresses start getting very pricey – unless you’re a large sleeper, you don’t buy a King because you need to. It’s the mattress you buy for luxury. Also, be wary of cheap King mattresses. The larger a mattress is, the more support it needs to stop the middle section and edges from sagging. The dimensions are: 76 inches x 80 inches.

• Cal King Mattress Sale

The California King bed size is the largest on offer from most mattress manufacturers. Many people make the mistake of believing the Cal King is bigger than the King on all sides, but that’s not true. In fact, the Cal King has a shorter width than the King by 4 inches. It’s designed for the extra tall, with an extended length. This is a big mattress, so make sure you have the room for it before ordering – and plan how you’ll get it up to your room. The dimensions are: 76 inches x 80 inches.

• Other Mattress Sizes

There are a lot of custom sizes out there. Double check the dimensions before you buy – many mattress manufacturers will also have a bed frame that’s the perfect size for the mattress. Don’t just buy the bed frame they recommend though. If your desired mattress is a standard size, you’ll be able to pick up a cheaper bed frame elsewhere in another mattress sale.

Besides custom sizes, there are 2 other types you’re going to come across:

• Long or XL – usually this just means that the mattress is a few inches longer, to accommodate tall sleepers. All mattress sizes could be extended into a longer version.
• Split – this means the mattress is split in 2, internally. From the outside it looks like a normal mattress, but the internal structure could be vastly different from one side to the other. If you like lots of foamy comfort for contour support, but your partner is a stomach sleeper and needs a very firm mattress, the split can cater to you both. Be careful when looking at split mattresses – some cheap brands might try to send you 2 different twin mattresses to put together. This is not ideal, as that gap can be pushed apart as you sleep, and the edges may sag creating a dip at the center.

Real split mattresses will cost you a hell of a lot but will keep both you and your partner comfortable. Ask yourself, is the extra cost worth both of you getting a good night’s sleep? How will that impact your quality of life? Don’t be pushed into a split mattress by a sales person unless you truly can’t stand sleeping on the same mattress as your partner.

Mattress Types

When you’re researching mattresses, it may feel like there are hundreds of different types out there with each manufacturer’s mattress sale showing off a unique feature. In reality, all mattresses can be fitted into 3 main categories:

• Memory Foam Mattress Sale

Memory foam mattresses are the most common. They “remember” your shape, contouring to your body and providing supreme support. They’re a soft spongey type of comfort. Memory foam is just the beginning of the foam mattress sale department. You’ve also got cooling foams, infused with copper, gel and graphite. Plus, breathable open cell foams and all kinds of branded types.

• Latex Mattress Sale

Latex is basically rubber, make synthetically or naturally. Like foam, it offers good contour support but is a bit firmer. Ideal for combination sleepers! It’s more expensive than foam and has quite the odor when you first install it in your bedroom. Most latex mattresses are supported with foam layers or coils.

• Spring and Coil Mattress Sale

The traditional innerspring mattress contains metal coils. They’re no longer the bumpy, squeaky mattress you remember from your childhood. Many of the best innerspring mattresses we’ve reviewed are very comfortable and utilize individually wrapped coils. This allows mediocre but perfectly firm contour support for back sleepers and isolates noise and motion when your partner rolls about.

Of course, many mattresses on the market are hybrids, meaning they contain two or more different mattress types. A basic hybrid usually contains innerspring coils topped with a few layers of memory foam.

How Much Should I Spend on A Mattress?

In our opinion, you should spend as much as you can afford. The average American car costs around $35,000 to buy new, and you’ll probably only spend a few hours in that car on weekdays. Your mattress, however, is used for around 8 hours every night, every day of the year, for up to a decade.

So, considering the importance of your mattress in your life, you should dedicate a sizeable budget to it. Here’s the average price range for each mattress size:

• Twin: $100 to $500
• Full: $400 to $1,200
• Queen: $800 to $1,900
• King: $900 to $3,000
• Cal King: $1,000 to $5,000

What Else Should I Buy in A Mattress Sales?

The only real essentials that you need with your mattress are bedding and a bed frame. Even then, some mattresses can go straight onto the floor. You don’t necessarily need to buy your bed frame from the same place the mattress sale is held. Some great places to find bargain bed frames online and in store are:

To make sure that you really are getting a bargain on your bedframe during mattress sale, these are the average prices:

• Quality steel frame, $100 to $150. Keeps your mattress off the floor but has limited support.
• Platform box, $300 to $500. Lifts your mattress off the floor, provides very firm support and can offer storage underneath.
• Solid wood frame, $500+ The solid wood is usually reserved for the head and foot board. Oak is one of the most expensive option, while pine can be quite affordable. These might have a solid base for strong support, or wooden slats. One luxurious example is Avocado’s reclaimed wood bedframe. Be prepared to part with $2,325 just for a twin!

The base of the bedframe is most important. Most will have wooden slats or metal bars. The closer they are together, the stronger the frame will be. Some mattresses will not be compatible with frames that have slats over a certain space apart. Double check before you buy!

Mattress Sale Add-Ons

• Mattress topper – this is like an extra layer of cushioning that you can add to your mattress. Some will be built in, so you must choose whether you want one or not when you buy. Others are attachable. In fact, you can buy mattress toppers that fit the standard mattress sizes from many places online. This means that if your mattress is a little too firm, or it loses cushioning, you can plump it up to extend the life.

This gives you a little freedom. If the only mattress on sale that fits your budget is a little too firm for your liking, that can be fixed with an affordable mattress topper.

• Mattress protector – this is a fabric cover, sewn into the mattress or an additional type of bedding sheet. It stops your mattress for absorbing sweat, pathogens, dead skin cells and other particles that would linger and fester. Many mattress manufacturers off these as a free additional, while others are easy to buy for a low price online. If a salesperson tries to sell you one at a “discounted” price that seems ridiculously high, don’t bother!
• Pillows and cushions – some mattress suppliers will include these, but it’s no big deal if they don’t. You can usually buy high quality pillows, or affordable pillows, from many places online, including Amazon. For cheap, hypoallergenic pillows you can find good ones for $20 to $30. For high-quality feather pillows, expect to pay up to $200. If the pillows included with the mattress sale cost more than this, it’s not really a sale.
• Sheets and covers – like the pillows, if your mattress is one of the standard sizes, you’ll be able to find sheets and covers to fit anywhere online. Cheap polyester sheets start at $10, while at the top of the market you’ve got microfiber and Egyptian cotton sheets that can set you back $300. If you’re unsure if the sheets and covers in the mattress sale are a rip off or not, then just say no and find a real bargain online.

President’s Day

On President’s Day, we found mattress sales live at nearly every mattress seller online and in stores across the country. Be prepared to haggle a little and find long queues at your nearest mattress store. If you are heading out to stores on this day, make sure you have in mind what you want so you can get in and out of the store with minimal hassle. It might be better to shop online if you want a quick purchase on this day!

Memorial Day

From our experience and research, most Memorial Day mattress sales are held on furniture websites, not the official mattress websites. Look at Sears and Amazon to start with. Don’t forget that stores will be closed on this day, but you might still find a Memorial Day sale the days before and after the state holiday.

Independence Day

Last 4^th July we saw some explosive mattress deals from the likes of Amerisleep and TEMPUR, as well as site-wide discounts from malls and stores. Not all mattress suppliers take part in this sale, so the key is to look for mattresses manufactured and owned by American companies.

Columbus Day

Another huge mattress sales day. Retailers including Bedding Mart and Macy’s have been known to have mattress sales on these days, plus Brooklyn’s Bedding and a host of different mattress manufacturers. Before you buy a mattress from a retailer on this day, particularly if it’s online, make sure you check the official website too. They might be offering a bigger discount on the exact same mattress.

Labor Day

Labor Day mattress sales cover Serta, Amerisleep, Casper and all mattresses available at Macy’s. Like all other mattress sale days, make sure you don’t end up with a bargain mattress you don’t like!

Veterans Day

There are major discounts on this day on everything, including mattresses, at retail stores across the country. But did you know that some mattress brands offer military discounts all year round? Look at the discounts from:

Black Friday & Cyber Monday

Although there are mattress sales on these days, we don’t recommend taking part unless you are absolutely 100% sure of the mattress you want. There’s a tendency to get caught up in the sales and end up buying 10x more pillows you need for a luxury mattress that’s ultra-comfy but won’t quite fit your bed frame.

In our opinion, you’ll get better value for money by spending a fair amount on a good mattress than getting a bargain on a mattress you saw in the sale but haven’t researched.

So, we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 cities we’re asked about. Find out the biggest mattress stores in your area where you might be able to catch an epic sale!

• Mattress Sale Chicago

Top of our list is Chicago! It seems many people struggle to find the best mattress sale in Chicago – or maybe there’s just too much choice.

The big brand mattress stores you can find across Chicago are Mattress Firm and American Mattress. You’ll find the highest number of mattress stores stretching up from New East Side towards Uptown. Boystown and Lincoln Park areas are a good place to start!

We’ve also heard some particularly good things about Sleep City and Chicago Discount Mattresses. Try there if you’re looking for advice before you buy and free delivery.

• Mattress Sale Las Vegas

It seems Las Vegas is home to not only the best casinos, but the best mattress stores too! No, really. The biggest mattress seller in Las Vegas is Best Mattress, followed by Mattress Firm and Macy’s.

Most mattress stores are Central/North Las Vegas. A good way to visit a chain of mattress stores in one go is to head along the 159, where you can find Best Mattress, Mattress Firm, and Mattress King of Las Vegas one after the other.

You’ll also find various mattress discount stores around trying to shift clearance stock – this is a good place to pick up a good mattress from a reputable brand for a low price.

• Mattress Sale Columbus Ohio

Columbus has a range of large mattress chains for you to choose from. You can find many Mattress Firm, Sleep Number, and The Original Mattress Factory stores across town. The Original Mattress Factory offers the best customer support without being overly pushy and salesy.

There are also quite a few independent mattress stores, if you’re willing to drive around a bit to find them.

Hot spots for mattress stores in Columbus Ohio are the Polaris Fashion Place and the streets south of the Ohio State University. We’ve also heard good things about Macy’s Furniture Clearance Center on Refugee Road.

• Mattress Sale Austin

Mattress Firm really has a firm grip on Austin! You can find many Mattress Firm stores are spread across North, South and Central Austin… but very few are outside of the central city area. Urban Mattress and Factory Mattress are 2 more stores you might see around. The vast majority, however, are independent stores in Austin.

We’d recommend Mattrezzz Guys (they’re legit, even though they don’t sound it!) and Austin Natural Mattress, if you want some help finding a good one.

• Mattress Sale Denver

Mattress Firm and Denver Mattress Company are the 2 big stores in this city. Most are in Central and South Denver. There’s a cluster around highway 2 between Glendale and Virginia Village, so this is a good place to start. Sleep Number and SleepNation can be found here too.

Urban Mattress has many good reviews thanks to their relaxed atmosphere that lets you find the right mattress at ease. Another great mattress sale Denver store!

• Mattress Sale Dallas

Mattress Firm, once again, dominate Dallas. You’ll also find several Mattress Expert stores dotted around town. Most mattress stores can be found in Uptown, Carrollton and along Dallas North Tollway.

If you’re happy to go on a bit of a drive, Mr. Mattress Furniture 4 Less (north of Lake Highlands) is one of the top-rated mattresses in the area. And there are plenty of happy mattress customers from Dallas Discount Mattress, if you want a huge bargain!

• Mattress Sale Indianapolis

The best way to browse Indianapolis mattress sales is to circle the I-465, as most stores are located on the outskirts of the city. Mattress Firm and American Mattress are the big stores in this area, but you’ll also find a few discount stores south towards Greenwood.

Furniture Overstock (Madison Avenue) is also a favorite of ours, offering great value when there’s a mattress sale on.

• Mattress Sale NYC

Most mattress stores are located from Midtown down to Brooklyn Bridge. Mattress Firm and COCO-MAT are the big stores in this area where you can find most of the popular mattress brands… they’re rarely a bargain unless they’re in a sale though!

The benefit of being in New York City is that you’ve got a higher than usual number of show rooms from mattress manufacturers. Leesa, Nest, Helix and Casper are just a few that you can test out for real before ordering in a mattress sale online.

Macy’s and Bob’s Discount Furniture stores are good places to shop in NYC as they offer delivery as well as a good service.

• Mattress Sale Miami

Mattress Firm and Mattress One stores are located across Miami FL. You can find a high concentration of mattress stores in The Shops at Midtown Miami and the surrounding blocks. There’s also a few around the South Dixie Highway by Northeast Coconut Grove.

Our personal recommendation is Mattress Kings along North Miami Avenue for a good bargain.

Finally, representing the West coast, Los Angeles Mattress Stores are the biggest mattress seller in this area. Mattress Central also have quite a few stores around.

Pico Boulevard, nearing Santa Monica, has a high number of mattress stores that you can browse. But don’t stop there because mattress stores are dotted evenly around Los Angeles and neighboring cities.

In-Store Mattress Sales

There’s a difference between a real mattress sale in store, and just having labels on mattresses declaring that they’ve got a discount applied. When you’re in a store, and there’s a real sale on, here’s a few tips to make sure you get the most from the mattresses on sale.

1. Try out the bed in the store. That initial impression of a bed is a good indication. Get rid of any fluffy pillows and just settle onto the mattress in your usual sleeping position (preferably with your partner too). Is it comfortable? You’ll only have a few minutes to check so don’t let the salesperson distract you. You also need to remember that the show mattress has probably been worn in by multiple people testing it – it might feel different when you get it back home… which brings us onto the next tip.
2. Check the returns/trial details. When you’re shopping online, checking the trial and delivery details is something you’ll do first. In the store, that often gets left to the end or even in the fine print. Make sure you ask and get a definitive answer from the salesperson before taking a mattress home.
3. If you’re not good at haggling, we recommend you go with a friend who has the balls to haggle for you. Sure, you’ll be inconveniencing a friend for an afternoon, but you could save $100s!
4. Ask lots of questions. Besides asking the questions that pop into your head, don’t be afraid to really quiz the salesperson and see if they are knowledgeable or just repeating a script. A good mattress store salesperson will know the mattresses inside and out.

If your mattress salesman is faltering at these questions, we’d advise that you politely turn away and find somewhere else to shop. If the salesperson doesn’t know the answers and you need to spend hours researching, you might as well buy online anyway!

Mattress Sale Online

Buying mattresses online gives you an overwhelming range of choices. There are pros and cons compared to buying a mattress in stores:

Mattress sales online really grab your attention with countdowns and “limited time only” icons. But take your time! Stocks aren’t going to run out fast (unless it’s cyber Monday, of course) so don’t get sucked in.

Some mattress stores, like Nest and even Avocado, will have physical showrooms even if they only sell mattresses online. If you’re lucky enough to find one in your city, we highly recommend going to test them out. Sure, that might mean that you pay $200 more because you missed the online sale, but it ensures you don’t waste $1,000 on a mattress you aren’t comfortable on.

Foam Mattresses Online

Let’s start with the foam mattresses. Below you’ll find a table of our favorite foam mattresses available online. But before you start browsing that, there are some things you should know about foam mattresses.

Foam mattress sales can be huge – but don’t go for an ultra-cheap foam mattress even at a discount. A terrible foam mattress is worse than a terrible hybrid, spring or latex mattress by far. Once they say, they’re the most uncomfortable to sleep on. If you’re going to buy a mattress that isn’t on our list, read some online reviews before buying!

To work out how much a foam mattress curves to your body, look at the depth of the top layer. If it only dips 1 inch, it’s going to feel quite firm for a foam mattress. A thick top layer will dip and curve with your body, which is great for side sleepers but a nightmare for back and stomach sleepers. For combination sleepers, look for foam mattresses with that thin top layer for all-round support.

Many foam mattresses will also have cooling mechanisms built in. The most common is the gel foam top layer. Now, this will keep you nice and cool at first, but as the memory foam dips and compresses to your body, that layer get’s thinner and the cooling effect drops. If heat is a real problem for you, look for mattresses that have cool sleeping mechanisms configured in at every level.

Latex Mattresses Online

Latex mattresses are the least common on the market and can be expensive! Even a latex mattress sale will set you back a fair amount. Here are some key considerations you need to think about when searching latex mattress sales!

Natural vs Synthetic Latex

Natural latex is collected from trees and plants, as liquid rubber. These last much longer than any other mattress type on the market. They do have an odor when new, caused by off-gassing. This can dissipate in a few days or take months. Read reviews to find out how long and keep hold of your old mattress until the latex has aired out.

Synthetic latex is chemically made to be very similar to natural latex, but it does have some key differences. Firstly, it’s not eco-friendly. It also has far worse off-gassing and is prone to tearing/sagging way before a natural latex mattress would. The real attraction to synthetic latex is the low price.

In the table below you’ll find pure latex mattresses and hybrid mattresses that have the benefits a latex mattress does. Prices range from $545 for a Twin to $2,499 for a Cal King, although they will be lower in the latex mattress sale.

Hybrid Mattress

A hybrid mattress offers the best comfort. Those that buy a hybrid find that they are the most satisfied. This is because they are all incredibly different. When you have many different layers, all of which can be different thicknesses and in a different order, the potential is limitless.

You might be wondering why we’ve got hybrids on our list for finding mattress sales rather than pure innersprings. The reason is, there are very few innerspring mattress sales worth your time. They’re just not comfortable and can’t provide the support other mattress types can.

Like the double is no longer used by couples, the innerspring is no longer used by those that are serious about getting a good night’s sleep.

With mattresses ranging from $100 to $8,000 (before sale discounts), you can find a lot of mattresses at Mattress Firm. Well-known brands on sale include Beautyrest and Serta, but there are also a lot of lesser-known mattresses on sale here. Make sure you research those thoroughly before you buy!

Sales at Mattress Firm usually include a discounted price or financing deal. Their stores are all over the states, you can usually find at least one in every city.

Sears Mattress Sale

Sears hold mattress sales at least yearly, so it’s a good idea to check whether there’s a sale on before buying elsewhere. Sears mattress sale stocks over 250 brands currently! That’s the most of any mattress seller that we’ve found. Most mattress brands mentioned on this list are included.

Tempur-Pedic mattresses are sold widely, everywhere from Costco to Amazon. Their prices are quite high, especially when you compare them to foam mattresses. If you like what Tempur-Pedic has to offer and you spot a sale, take advantage.

Official Tempur-Pedic stores and showrooms where you can talk to real experts are mostly found on the east coast around New York state.

Serta Mattress Sale

Serta, like Sealy, are sold on the official website and at various outlets. Some discounts you might see online or in adverts apply to direct sales from the official website only, so don’t get your hopes up for an extra discount at Macy’s!

JCPenney’s mattress sales offer free delivery (online), discounted prices and extra reward points. Prices average between $1,000 and $3,000, but they do also have a selection of cheap mattresses for a few hundred dollars and even some over $5,000.

Despite closing many stores in the past few years, you can still find JCPenney stores around the states. Their best sales, however, are now online.

Mattress Warehouse Sale

Mattress Warehouse, and sister company Sleep Outfitters, stock mattresses from Sealy, Tempur-Pedic, Stearns & Foster, Symbol, Malouf and Comfort Revolution. Prices start at around $200, which is average, but they also stock some very high-end mattresses coming in at about $3,000. Their sales are both online and instore.

You can find Mattress Warehouse and Sleep Outfitters stores in eastern states including Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia.

Big Lots Mattress Sale

Big Lots have a range of mattresses from varying sellers, primarily Serta and Zeopedic. Prices for a Queen mattress range from $100 to $1,300. Most deals at Big Lots are for buying the mattress as part of a set, with a bed frame or bedding – that’s where you make the saving.

You can find Big Lots stores in every state across the USA, excluding Hawaii and Alaska.

IKEA Mattress Sale

IKEA mattress sales include their stock of Morgedal (foam), Haugesund (spring), Haugsvar (hybrid), Matrand (memory foam), Hesstun (Eurotop), Myrbacka (latex), and a range of pillowtop mattresses.
